Prof. Fang Zhu - Apitherapy

Prof. Fang Zhu’s 55 years of Apitherapy Health Care

In 1950s, Prof. Fang found foreign countries applied bees and bee products to medicine and health in his medical work, and then began to pay close attention to study this.
In July 1956, Prf. Fang Zhu started to keep bees and study apitherapy health care, through experiments, observations and collecting information at home and abroad, he believed that bees were valuable for developing our country. Then on February 14, 1958, he wrote the paper “Bee—the Friend of Health” and published it on the newspaper “People’s Daily”.
In 1959, Bee Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, engaged Prof. Fang Zhu as their special researcher. When chairman Zhu De inspected the institute “Bee—The Friend of Health” was submitted to him, after chairman Zhu read it, he wrote to Chairman Mao on January 16, 1960 and praised bee as “the friend of human beings”, as “matchmaker” of crop pollination, proposed to develop apiculture. Since 1960s, Chinese apiculture gradually flourished.

Ⅱ. Developing Propolis Tablet for Treating Diseases, Known as “Father of Propolis”

When beekeepers open the bee-box and inspect bees, they first open the side cover of box to separate each honeycomb, because these places are often clung by yellowish-brown or light green propolis. Bees produce propolis to fill holes of box and make their hive clean, but thrown away by beekeepers.

In 1956, Prof. Fang Zhu began to use propolis to treat skin diseases, as a result, it’s proved that propolis had the activity of anti-bacteria, could be used to treat tinea problems on the body surface and mycosis in the deep skin. Prof. Fang Picture 2-2 Collect Propolis published the paper about treating skin diseases by propolis in the “Chinese Journal of Dermatology”, which was the first article introducing the medical effects of propolis in China.

By the end of 1960s, Prof. Fang led medical workers, without return or recompense, delivered many drugs to workingmen. At that time, when finding porters often suffered fissure of hands and feet, he gave propolis ointment to them, shortly, the fissure problem was cured. However, this ointment might taint clothes so that caused some inconvenience, thus Prof. Fang tried to produce the preparation for orally taking.

Prof. Fang applied propolis tablet to treat 140 cases of psoriasis patients in the clinic, the result showed propolis tablet has the obvious effect in treating psoriasis, in this period, many patients took propolis tablets with large dose for a long time to prevent relapse, also not showed any side-effect. Doctors examined these 140 patients so as to discover causes of psoriasis, and surprisingly detected their hyperlipemia has been improved evidently.
To clearly confirm that propolis tablet can lower the blood fat, Prof. Fang made experiment on animals: fed rabbits with propolis powder, blood tests showed the blood fat was clearly lower than that of controlled group. This says propolis can reduce blood fat. And then he selected hyperlipemia patients to take propolis tablets continuously, did not limit the fatty foods and not take any other drugs or treatment, finally it proved propolis tablet had the effect of reducing blood fat.

In 1975, Prof. Fang Zhu developed and produced propolis tablet for treating hyperlipemia and atherosclerosis. The efficacy of propolis tablet in preventing hyperlipemia was proved and affirmed by three medical schools and nine hospitals in Jiangsu province. At the tablet won the license of medicine appraisal meeting, propolis tablet were widely commended by every expert, was licensed by medical government and produced for the clinic

In 1978, at the International Academic Conference on Apitherapy, held in Portoroz, Yugoslavia, Prof. Fang Zhu delivered the paper “The Study on Medical Effects of Propolis” and reported the observation result of using propolis to resist fungi and orally taking to treat hyperlipemia. Prof. Fang is the first person in the world to prevent and treat diseases by orally taking propolis tablets, known as “Father of Propolis”.

In 1981, Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio produced “Professor Fang Zhu – Specialist in Apitherapy” to introduce the research, clinical application and identification process of propolis tablets.

According to his studies, Prof. Fang Zhu published many works on propolis, for example, “The Research and Medical Application of Propolis” (in 1980) and the book “Propolis” (in 1984), and this book is the first specialized publication on propolis in China, revised and published again in 1999. These works introduced the medical and healthy values in detail. “Anti-bacteria” and “treating hyperlipemia” effects were recorded into “Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China”.

Ⅲ. Prof. Ye Juquan, Academician of Chinese Academy of Science, Highly Approved Pollen Research

Bee pollen is kind of granular material collected by bees from the stamen anther of angiosperm or pollen cells within the microsporangium of gymnosperm, is the only source of edible protein of bees. Prof. Fang’s paper “Bee—The Friend of Health”, publisheded on the newspaper “People’s Daily” in 1958, have proposed maintaining health by pollen.

Experiments have confirmed that bee pollen contains all the essential amino acids of human beings, essential fatty acids that the human body cannot synthesize by itself, vitamine and trace elements. These substances play a significant role in health. In addition, inherent botanical ingredients of bee pollen can prevent and treat certain diseases.

In 1958, Prof. Fang Zhu took the lead in proposing using bee pollen to maintain health in China, meanwhile, wrote Chinese first work on pollen—Book of Pollen, systemically introducing beepollen knowledge and its values, published by China Agriculture Press in 1985.

Prof. Ye Juquan, academician of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and famous Chinese medicine expert, highly approved and supported Fang Zhu’s research on pollen.

Prof. Ye Juquan, born in 1896, engaged in medical work for 70 years, at his later years, he highy praised pollen and made researches. He wrote preface for the book of POLLEN, in which cited the application of pollen in nutriology and beauty at all times, praised bee pollen as “an good food for therapy with most complete nutrition, can strengthen physical force and vitality, rapidly relieve fatigue, maintain beauty and anti-aging”. Prof. Ye believed “pollen is the most improvement, the best food, and natural concentrated micro drug store.”
In September 1984, Professor Ye Juquan, who was 89 years old, took part in National New Type Nourishment Source—Bee Pollen Class, held in Lian Yun gang Apitherapy Hospital, and lectured, also wrote poem “Praising Pollen”: Bee pollen is essence of plants, and there were many ancient prescriptions about pollen as food therapy. Pollen can keep beauty and longevity. Promoting bee pollen will beneficial to health.

In 1970s, over 40-year-old men in Sweden and other European countries usually took bee pollen to prevent and cure prostate problems.

Through further research and clinical practice, we found the rape pollen from Qinghai Plateau could treat male problems such as prostatitis, hyperplasia of prostate and so on. In 1987, Prof. Fang joined in the identification & acceptance of “Development of New Type of Pollen Products” (Chinese spark project).

Ⅳ. Exporting Natural Honey to Japan century-corporation, Saitama Yoho

Honey is well known as natural nourishing food. Prof. Fang studied medical and dietetic values of bee products and found out those Chinese ancient books recorded honey could clear the heat, relieve poision, harmonize drugs and moisten. Therefore, advised constipation and people need take drugs for a long time to eat honey.

In 1985, Prof. Fang Zhu met Mr. Shimizu shin-Ichi, President of Japan Honey Cooperative Association and Saitama Yoho Co., Ltd in Apicultural Science Association of China located in Frangrance Hill of Beijing. Saitama was founded in 1908, over one hundred years now, and its natural honey is for Emperor of Japan.

After the Second World War, Japan speeded up urbanization so that lots of bee plants were destroyed, thus president Shimizu shin-Ichi visited China and wanted to import natural honey from China. Prof. Fang explained the quality and standard of our natural honey to him, by combining Chinese bee plants, and then exported highly pure, natural acacia honey, free of pesticide residue, which is sold in Japan as top-grade honey.

From November 1986 to now, Prof. Fang Zhu was invited to Japan for six times. Kimihiro Shimizu PH.D., Head of Technology, visited Lian Yun Gang Apitherapy Hospital, gave lectures about the detection technique of natural honey and royal jelly at the class of bee-product quality, presented Japanese gas chromatograph. SAITAMA Corporation sent their technician to visit our apiary and exchange for many times.

In 2007, by our authorization, SAITAMA Corporation registered the trademark of “ 房 柱 ” (Fang Zhu), and the entry number is 5098863, as the identification for importing Fangs natural honey.

Ⅴ. In Charge of Developing Lyophilized Royal Jelly

Royal jelly is a kind of milk white or faint yellow viscous substance secreted from the pharyngeal glands of worker honeybees, fed to all larvae during their first three days and afterward only to queens. Due to eat royal jelly, the life span of queen bees is several dozen times as many as that of worker bees. The longevity of queen bees depends on royal jelly.

In 1954, Pontiff Pio Ⅻ, who was 80 years old, was completely bedridden, though having used a variety of treatment methods, but affected nothing. In that desperation, his doctor decided to try royal jelly and it was really a miracle that the pontiff came back to life. In the following year, his doctor opened this at one international academic conference held in Rome. In 1956, Pio participated in International Conference in Beekeeping, and narrated the magic effect of royal jelly which brought him back to life, said, “royal jelly is the magical gift from God.” Set off an upsurge of royal jelly in Europe. More and more people began to take royal jelly but got a little effect, thus they had to question the value of royal jelly.

In 1972, one expert of the Soviet Union fed queen bee larvae with fresh royal jelly which saved for 5 days under 18℃ but failed to foster them.

Researches proved that royal jelly has high activity, however, its active nutritive substances will be unstable when in heat, only be maintained at -18℃. So even a little high temperature will make royal jelly lost its effects. Therefore, how to save royal jelly under the normal temperature became the most key problem.

In 1984, Prof. Fang Zhu found the freeze-dry technique of food may help save active substances of royal jelly under the normal temperature, and then applied for Jiangsu Science and Technology Commission to develop the freeze-dry technique of royal jelly, under the ultra-low temperature and high vacuum condition, he make water content of nutrient substances in the royal jelly sublimate and into the freeze-dry powder. In this way, saving active components in the royal jelly under the normal temperature came true.

During the process of the freeze-dry royal jelly, sublimate water content which accounting for 2/3 of total mass, this technique achieves preserving active substances under the normal temperature, meantime, its nutritional components have been concentrated in three times.

Then the freeze-dry royal jelly began to be widely used among medical and regimen field, after taking it, most people reflected that freeze-dry royal jelly was easy to take with good effect.

Ⅵ. Created Bee Acupuncture Therapy and Founded Chinese First Apitherapy Hospital

When working in Worker’s Hospital and Sanatorium of Huaibei Salt Bureau, there were many people suffering rheumatoid arthritis, a frequently-occurring disease caused by cold-dampness. It was due to disadvantaged condition of salt production, salt workers were often soaked in brine. As a doctor, in order to relieve patients’ sufferings, Prof. Fang widely read Chinese and foreign medical journals, learned that Charles of the Charlemagne Empire and Czar of Russia Иван IV experienced bee sting to treat gouty arthritis, and confirmed them from “Great Encyclopedia of Soviet Union”, meanwhile, the book also recorded some contraindications of bee venom, Prof. Fang first carried out pharmacological tests of animals. At that time he had focal tuberculosis which was just contradiction, but he ignored his personal safety, followed Shen Nong tasted a hundred herbs, breaking down the venom contraindication. Later, Prof. Fang went deep into the study in application of bee venom and its contraindication, found in fact bee venom contraindications were not like the description in the encyclopedia, afterwards, bee venom can serve the people more safer and wider. In 1957, Fang Zhu published “Summary of Bee Venom Therapy” on the CHINA APICULTURE magazine to introduce the medical application of bee venom and encourage developing and using bee venom.

In 1959, Prof. Fang Zhu reported using bee acupuncture to treat chronic diseases such as rheumatism and arthritis. According to the principle of “diagnosis and treatment based on overall analysis of symptoms and signs”, as well as meridian and points theory of Chinese medicine, Prof. Fang created China Bee Acupuncture, in the same year, he published the paper about China Bee acupuncture at the Moscow Medical Conference on Bee keeping.

In 1980, Prof. Fang Zhu established Chinese first Apitherapy Institute and Hospital in Lian Yun Gang City of Jiangsu Province, using “Bee Acupuncture Therapy” to cure many arthritis and Prof. Huang Shuze listened to Prof. Fang’s report, and wrote the inscription
rheumatic patients. In 1985, Prof. Huang Shuze, undersecretary of Ministry of Health of China visited Apitherapy Hospital, after listened to Prof. Fang’s report, he approved completely and wrote “BEE—The Friend of Health” for the hospital, and then wrote the name for Prof. Fang’s book, “The Research and Medical Application on Bee Venom”, which is also the first bee venom book in China, wrote titles for the “Bee Products and Bee Acupuncture” Newspaper.

In 1986, Prof. Fang cooperated with Nanjing Pharmacy College (now is China Pharmaceutical University) and developed the freeze-dry bee venom drug by injection, the raw bee venom and injection were contained into the “Drug Standard of Jiangsu Province” and “Standards of Chinese Patent Drugs” (Standard No. WS-11322-2002) Subsequently, Prof. Fang also developed venom liniment named “Fang’s peptide oil”, displayed at the International Exhibition of Chinese Medicine in Singapore and caused a high sensation at home and abroad.
Prof. Fang wrote his many years of research on bee acupuncture into books, providing for more researchers and practitioners a reference. From 1993 to 2002, he published CHINA BEE ACUPUNCTURE, BEE ACUPUNCTURE THERAPY FOR MANY DISEASES and MODRN BEE ACUPUNCTURE AND BEE VENOM THERAPY.

For those 55 years, up to million patients accepted bee acupuncture treatment. Some arthritis and asthma patients did not relapse after three or four decades. The Central News Documentary Film Studio, CCTV and other media produced programs to report it.

Ⅶ. Partipating in Creating Apicultural Science Association of China (ASAC), Students are All over the World

These promoted international exchanging and cooperation in apitherapy.

Centenarian Mr. Su Juxian, Eminent in Literature, Wrote the Poem of Apitherapy Health Care

During many years of researches on apitherapy, Prof. Fang Zhu met many long-lived people who are proficient in health maintenance. One of them is Mr. Su Juxian (1882~1991), 110 years old and eminent in literature, came from Shanghai City, the 28th grandson of Poet Su Dongpo in Song Dynasty. He was good at poet and calligraphy, which reached the peak. He was recognized as “Chinese Healthy Elderly” and “Shanghai First Elderly”.

In 1991, Prof. Fang Zhu visited Mr. Su. Mr. Su had an insightful scene in values of bees and bee products, and wrote a poem: “Apiculture is good for health and longevity, bee products for healthcare, bee venom can conquer stubborn diseases, and bee acupuncture can bring back to life”. This poem sums up the whole picture of apitherapy health care.
